What the exchanges charge

Every figure below is measured, not quoted. We put our own money through each exchange โ€” one real buy, one real sell โ€” and recorded what came back. Three of the five charged something different from their published rate.

Cost per trade

ExchangeTakerMaker Round tripNotes
Hyperliquid0.045%0.015%0.09%Perps. Cheapest by a distance, and the venue the strategy was designed on.
Binance0.1%0.1%0.2%Takes the BUY commission out of the coin you receive, so a buy can look free while costing the same as the sell. Not available to US residents.
Bybit0.1%0.1%0.2%Charges both sides in USDT, so what you see is what you pay. Not available to US or UK residents.
KuCoin0.4%0.2%0.8%Four times Binance for the same job. Not available to US residents.
Kraken0.8%0.4%1.6%Advertises 0.26%. A new account with no 30-day volume pays 0.80% โ€” we measured it. Falls as your volume grows.
Coinbase1.2%0.6%2.4%The most expensive venue here, and the entry tier is the one every new account starts in. See the tier table below โ€” it drops fast.

A DCA bot buys and sells at market, so it pays the taker rate on both sides. That is the round-trip column.

Why this decides your take-profit

Your bot buys, then sells at a profit target. Both trades cost you. So a take-profit is not what you keep โ€” what you keep is the target minus the round trip.

If your first target is2%3%5%8%
Hyperliquid+1.91%+2.91%+4.91%+7.91%
Binance+1.80%+2.80%+4.80%+7.80%
Bybit+1.80%+2.80%+4.80%+7.80%
KuCoin+1.20%+2.20%+4.20%+7.20%
Kraken+0.40%+1.40%+3.40%+6.40%
Coinbase-0.40%+0.60%+2.60%+5.60%

Read the red squares. On Coinbase a 2% take-profit loses money every time it fires โ€” the bot works perfectly, closes deal after deal, and the account goes down. On Kraken a 2% target keeps four-tenths of one percent, and one bad fill erases it.

This is why the same settings behave differently on different exchanges. A ladder that is comfortable on Hyperliquid or Binance can be unworkable on Coinbase without changing a single bot setting.

What to do about it

Coinbase, in particular

Coinbase has the widest gap between its entry rate and its real one, and every new account starts in the worst tier. It is charged on your rolling 30-day volume:

30-day volumeMakerTaker
under $1,0000.60%1.20%
$1,000+0.35%0.75%
$10,000+0.25%0.40%
$50,000+0.15%0.25%

Coinbase also sells a subscription, Coinbase One, which waives trading fees up to a monthly volume cap. It is worth arithmetic rather than enthusiasm: at the entry tier, trading $2,000 a month costs about $48 in fees, so a $29.99 plan saves roughly $18 โ€” and a plan with a $500 cap saves you very little. Work out your own volume before subscribing to anything.

A note on honesty

We publish measured numbers because published ones misled us. Kraken advertises 0.26% and charged us 0.80%. Binance takes its buy commission in the coin rather than in dollars, so a buy looks free. Coinbase's own documentation is easy to read as 0.60% when a new account pays double that. None of these are tricks โ€” they are tiers, conventions and small print โ€” but they all cost real money, and you should see them before you choose.

Rates change. These were measured in August 2026; check your exchange's own fee page before making a decision that depends on the exact figure.
